Sun Cycle

The NTS SunCycle has exceeded our expectations.

The launch of the NTS SunCycle is going to be the big PR event of the year. It is essentially the NTS LockerCycle with a large and highly efficient solar panel. Technically the NTS SunCycle has exceeded our expectations. We have tested the power produced from the solar panel in the winter sun and we were able to exceed the rated power of 60 watts. That is more power than you use with the power setting on low. On a sunny day you can ride around with pedal assist on solar power alone!

    Hi,

I would like to write about your SunCycle for the blog and for a presentation I am doing at The International Cargobike Festival in April.

    I have some questions:

    1. I read: “We have tested the power produced from the solar panel in the winter sun and we were able to exceed the rated power of 60 watts. That is more power than you use with the power setting on low.”
How long did the power last?

    2. Who do you see as your typical customers?

    3. Prices?

    4. Any colour as long as it is white?

    Thanks,

    Andrea

      Andrea,
We would love to come to the cargo bike festival, but I already booked a speaking engagement at a university during that time. I might try to work something out, but the schedule is very tight.

The solar panel is working really well. Even when the sun angle is off 45 degrees it still puts out 50 watts of power. When the panel is 90 degrees to the sun on a bright day it will put out around 65 watts. Our bikes are pedal assist and on low power with pedaling, the solar panel puts out more power than the motor uses. So on low power assist, you can ride as long as the sun shines. Once the sun is down, we have a 500 wh battery.

We also made our own solar panel power controller that is 99% efficient. The downside is that isn’t great at keeping the power going with partial shade on the panels. I think this is a good tradeoff for high efficiency.

We are going to sell to both consumers and businesses. There are big markets for both. We are working on a specific version to deliver mail in the EU.

We will have pricing on our web site next week.

The white powdercoat is called 90% highly reflective white and it’s very visible at night. We like the safety aspect so we’d like to offer reflective white only.

Please feel free to ask more questions.

      Thanks,
